Meet The New Babies!

Meet our first farm animals, born today!  My sister's goat, June, gave birth to 2 healthy does this afternoon.  Katie knows I want dairy goats once we move and is awesome enough to care for these girls for me until we have land.  I wish Maryland wasn't so far away and I could snuggle these girls.  I love goats and goat kids are just the best!

Because their mother, June, has CAE (goat arthritis), the babies can't nurse from their momma.  The CAE won't get passed on to the babies if they're fed milk replacer or the milk from a non-CAE goat.  Luckily Ida, June's daughter, who just had a buck of her own, doesn't have CAE and can provide some of the milk for the new little girls.
They were 7 pounds each.  They're Oberhasli's, which are an old dairy breed.  I love their coloring.
The one in the front, with more black on her head, is Elphaba (we'll call her Elphie).  The one in the back with more brown on her head is Nessarose ( Nessa).  The names are from Wicked, one of Jon's favorite musicals.  Hopefully these girls won't act like their witchy namesakes.
Thank you, Katie!  I'm so excited! Now to get this house sold and buy a farm!
